To qualify for a Materials Examiner and Identifier (FLO), your qualifications must include: Per OPM's Job Qualification System for Trades and Labor Occupations, the applicant's experience, education and training must show enough knowledge, skills and abilities to demonstrate the potential to successfully perform the duties of the position. Under this system, how applicants gained their skill and knowledge, or the length of time they have spent in a line of work, are not as important as the fact that they have the required ability or potential to do the job.
Physical Effort Performs moderate to heavy lifting (up to 40 pounds, requesting assistance for those items weighing more than 40 pounds). Moves and position materiel by hand or hand truck. Heavier and bulky/unwieldy materiel is moved by materials handling equipment, or with the assistance of coworkers. Work requires standing and/or walking for lengthy periods of time and often requires bending, stooping, pushing, and/or pulling materiel.
Working Conditions Work is performed in a warehouse environment or in outside work areas on a year- round basis. May work in a congested mechanized automated environment with constant movement of conveyors and materials handling equipment. May be subject to cuts, bruises, abrasions, and scrapes in moving or handling equipment. Subject to hazards involved in working in close proximity to moving equipment such as conveyors, tow-line systems, and materials handling equipment. In addition, may also be exposed to dust, dirt, grease, solvents, and to high noise levels in mechanized work areas. When working with hazardous materials, may be subject to exposure from radiation, toxins, explosive hazards, or chemical fumes. SAFETY AND HEALTH REQUIREMENTS: Employee is required to wear safety clothing and equipment appropriate for the job and work area assigned, as directed by the supervisor. Types of required protective clothing and equipment include, but are not limited to the following: eye, respiratory, and foot protection, protective clothing (gloves apron, coveralls, etc.). Other types may be required as deemed necessary by authorized management officials. Employee will be required to wear approved hearing protective devices and an audiometric test will be conducted, as necessary, when working near or around noise hazardous areas, machinery, or equipment.
